Komatsu was the world's largest manufacturer of crawler excavators last year, manufacturing 23582 machines. Citing data from Off-Highway Research, the company sold 8300 more excavators than its nearest rival, Hitachi. A major factor in this success - which equates to a 19% market share by volume - was its KOMTRAX satellite monitoring system, which is now a standard on most of its machines. It also highlighted the appeal of comprehensive 'Maintenance Plus' service agreements to its customers.

Other manufacturers in the major league of crawler excavator sales included Hitachi - 15214 machines sold, a 12.3% share, Doosan (12555 units, 10.1% share), Hyundai (11240 units, 9.1% share) and Caterpillar (10340 units, 8.3% share).
