05.07.2010 Venezuela to Acquire Stakes in MAZ and BelAZ

Venezuela may acquire stakes in Belarus’ state-owned Minsk Automobile Plant (MAZ) and Belarusian Automobile Plant (BelAZ) in Zhodzina, Ambassador Americo Diaz Nunez told reporters in Minsk. A decision was made in 2009 for Venezuela to take part in the privatization of Belarusian enterprises. The list of enterprises in which Venezuela is interested includes MAZ and BelAZ, but no final decision has been made in this regard. Certain agreements in this regard are to be reached during President Hugo Chavez’s visit to Minsk this fall.

Venezuela purchases thousands of tractors, trucks, buses and components for them, “which allows Belarus to maintain its industry, and the Belarusian and Russian people to preserve their jobs, as many components of Belarusian equipment are made in Russia and a considerable part of raw materials comes from Russia as well.
