19.05.2008 Multiple-Unit Train Siemens Desiro ML

The Belgian rail operator Société Nationale de Chemins de Fer Belge (SNCB) has placed an order for 305 multiple-unit trains of Siemens to be used in Belgium’s regional rail service. The contract is worth EUR 1.425 billion and marks the biggest order Siemens has ever received in the rolling stock sector. The vehicle is based on the design adopted for the new Siemens platform of regional trains. The Desiro ML can accommodate 280 passengers and has a top speed of 160 km/h.

The Desiro ML is a train specially designed to meet the frequently changing demands of regional rail service. The modular construction of the individual cars enables the train to be combined into a wide range of configurations. Furthermore, the operator can choose from various types of interior design which, depending on the region to be served, ensures flexibility even regarding the number of seats, the seat spacing and space reserved for bicycles and wheelchairs. The first vehicles of this new product line are currently in the commissioning phase and are scheduled to enter service for the German regional rail operator Mittelrheinbahn at the end of 2008. The first multiple-unit trains will be manufactured at the Siemens plant in Krefeld-Uerdingen in Germany beginning summer 2009.
